We run an expansive programme of pop-up workshops bringing creative practitioners into our Artspace in Bath to bring all manner of making and creating to our space.
Our pop-up workshops tend to be one-off sessions (rather than our ongoing class timetable), though we are of course happy to revisit topics by popular demand. Workshops may be seasonal or we just may have a workshop running on an interesting topic because we managed to convince a brilliant practitioner to fit something into their busy schedule with us.
Class sizes are deliberately small and our workshops are always relaxed, friendly, supportive and lots of fun.
Keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming schedule of workshops here and book early as places are limited!
You can subscribe to our mailing list for updates on upcoming workshops.

OIL PAINTING WORKSHOP with Valerie Pirlot SATURDAY 25th January 1.30-5p.m.

    OIL PAINTING WORKSHOP
SAT 25 JAN with Valérie Pirlot
    Painting flowers from life

    £50

    Saturday 25 January 2020
    1.30-5pm
    Cost: £50
Audience: For Adults and teenagers. Some basic experience of oil painting required. Suitable for advanced students too.
    Students bring their own materials.

Valerie is a self taught artist and experienced tutor. She loves to share her passion for painting with others. In this workshop we will produce together a painting of flowers from life ‘alla prima’ (in one session).

The main focus in my teaching is to help you feel more confident using oils, and work in a free and spontaneous way, with freshness and energy while having lots of fun. If you want to be looser in your work, want to explore/improve painting from life, or if you are simply looking for a reliable painting method, then this workshop is for you. I will detail all the tips and techniques I use to help you improve and progress.

The workshop will cover the various topics:
    -talk about material
    -set up a still life
    -choose a composition
    -prepare your painting palette
    -mix colours
    -improve your brushstrokes
    -improve your tones and colours
-have a clear method to build your painting
    -refine your observation skills
-know how to finish a painting

    Materials
Because this workshop is not suitable for complete beginners, we expect students to bring their own materials. You can bring your usual brushes / paints / support. However, you are welcome to have a look at the list of material I will bring, and if you want to achieve results as close as possible to what I will produce, then I advise you to bring the same or similar colours than those on my list.

Please refer to link here to see my list of colours and the type of brushes and support I use.

    https://www.valeriepirlot.com/material

In terms of size of support, I recommend you bring a few sizes so you can choose the best depending on the composition. For example, I will bring 3 boards: 10”x12”, a 10”x10” and a 9”x9”.

Table easels will be supplied on the day, but you are welcome to bring your set up if for example you have your own pochade box.

Note about my paints: I use the water soluble oils Artisan range from Winsor & Newton. I use water instead of turp for the early stages of washes and blocking in. Then I use pure paint without any medium, although there is a range of mediums available from Artisan for those who prefer their paints to flow more. The technique I teach will be the same for traditional oils so you can bring your usual paints and bring the mediums you are comfortable with. But if you ever wanted to give water mixable a try, this can be the chance to do so.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need help buying some material.

Tea / coffee and biscuits provided.
